Nutrition in Hypertension

Hypertension (high blood pressure) is one of the most important risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Changing your diet can be as effective as medication.

At our diet clinic, this is what we do for people with hypertension:

  • We limit sodium (salt). Daily salt intake should be brought below 5 grams (1 teaspoon). Foods high in salt, such as processed foods, brined foods, pickles and ready-made sauces, are restricted.
  • We follow the principles of the DASH diet. Based on the “Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH)” model, we plan a balanced diet built on vegetables, fruit, low-fat dairy and whole grains rich in potassium, calcium and magnesium.
  • We build the habit of reading labels and raise awareness of hidden sources of salt.
  • We plan adequate fluid intake. Especially for patients taking diuretics, fluid intake is adjusted with attention to electrolyte balance.
  • We help with weight control. Excess weight can directly raise blood pressure. Weight loss is aimed for with a personalized plan that limits energy but stays sustainable.

In hypertension, it is not only “less salt” that matters, but also the right carbohydrates, suitable fat choices and enough protein. We support lifestyle change with a comprehensive approach.
