What is peripheral artery disease?

Besides the heart itself, disease and narrowing also occur in the arteries that carry blood from the heart to the rest of the body.

What symptoms does it cause?

These are called peripheral arteries. Narrowing of the leg arteries causes symptoms such as calf or thigh pain when walking and sores on the feet or legs; narrowing of the neck arteries causes stroke, dizziness and similar symptoms; narrowing of the kidney arteries causes high blood pressure and kidney failure; narrowing of the arm arteries causes numbness and pain in the arms.

How is it treated?

Once definitively diagnosed by angiography, narrowings in these arteries can usually also be treated without surgery, using a balloon and stent.

Experience

Prof. Dr. Mehmet Aksoy took part in founding the Department of Cardiology at Gaziantep University in 2000 and served as its Head; today he performs angiography and interventional procedures at Medical Point Gaziantep Hospital.
