Heart valve replacement without surgery (TAVI)
In aortic valve stenosis, replacing the valve without surgery through a catheter procedure has become a popular treatment in recent years, especially for patients who cannot have surgery or for whom surgery is high risk.
Opening narrowed valves with a balloon
Some heart valves (mitral, pulmonary, etc.) can become narrowed, either from birth or later due to causes such as rheumatic heart disease. When this narrowing becomes severe, it is treated with surgery or, in suitable patients, the heart is reached by catheter and the valve is opened by widening it with a balloon.
