What is CT angiography?

CT angiography (virtual angiography) is a modern, non-invasive method used to diagnose heart and vascular disease. Using advanced computed tomography scanners, a special contrast agent is injected into a vein and detailed images of the coronary arteries are obtained.

Unlike conventional angiography, no catheter is inserted through the groin or wrist, which makes it a very comfortable examination for the patient.

What does it show?

CT angiography can show with high accuracy whether there is narrowing or blockage in the coronary arteries and whether there is calcification in the artery walls. The heart chambers, the thickness of the heart muscle and some congenital heart abnormalities can also be assessed with CT imaging.

Who is it for?

This method is especially valuable for patients with chest pain for whom it is unclear whether coronary angiography is needed, and for people in the low and intermediate risk groups. The procedure is completed quickly, and the patient can return to daily life afterwards.
